MeMA Bylaws

Article I. Name. The name of the Association shall be the Medical Museums Association.

Article II. Purpose. The Medical Museums Association was created to promote longterm contacts among individuals, institutions, and organizations involved in collecting historical artifacts and objects of interest to the health sciences.

Article III. Membership. A. Membership categories: Professional (voting), Associate (non-voting), and Student. 1. Professional, or voting, members shall be limited to persons who have professional responsibilities for a museum or artifact collection in the history of the health sciences. 2. Associate, or nonvoting, membership shall be open to persons interested in the concerns of the Association, such as professional and amateur historians, physicians, dentists, nurses, and other health professionals, booksellers, dealers in medical antiques, private collectors, etc., but who have no direct responsibilities for collections in the history of the health sciences. 3. Student members, also non-voting, are admitted by submission of a letter from an academic advisor confirming the student’s status.

Article IV. Elected Officers. A. Elected officers of the Association shall be President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, and the immediate past President. B. The officers of the Association shall serve a term of two years and may be re-elected for no more than two consecutive terms. The Vice President will become the next President upon completion of President’s terms. All officers shall be voting members. C. The President shall act as Executive Officer of the Association and shall preside at all meetings of the Association; when unable to attend such meetings, the Vice President will serve in his/her place. The President shall set the agenda for the business session of the annual meeting and the Vice President shall arrange for the accompanying program of the annual meeting.. D. The officers shall be elected by ballot at the annual meeting and take seats in the year in which they are elected. E. Any vacancies among the officers shall be filled by the President until the next meeting of the Association. At the time of the annual meeting, definite replacements can be determined by ballot of the members.
